The lake has been there for three million years. Your flight from Sydney is 24 hours. Both of you will be fine.
The Lake That Predates the Maps
Ohrid is one of the oldest and deepest lakes in the world — older than most of the mountains surrounding it. The water is clear to ten metres on a calm day, a specific blue that doesn't translate to photos. You'll try anyway. It won't work.
The town sits on the western shore in North Macedonia, two hours from Skopje on a road that winds through mountains and villages. UNESCO listed it decades ago. Your baba knew it was worth something long before that.
The Old Town Still Smells Like the Same Thing
Cobblestones. Kafanas. The Church of Saint John the Theologian on a cliff above the water, placed there for your phone camera and also for a thousand years of actual faith. The old bazaar. Byzantine churches. The fortress walls.
If you grew up with stories about it, going back is disorienting in a specific way: the place is smaller than you imagined, and also exactly right. If it's your first time, it becomes the reference point everything else gets measured against.
What to Eat and Who to Argue With About It
The Ohrid trout — pastrmka — is the dish. It is technically a protected species. It is technically on every menu. Order it where you can, fresh and grilled, with bread and a view of the water.
Otherwise: tavče gravče, because Macedonian food always comes back to the beans eventually. Meze plates. Whatever the kafana is making that day. A rakija before noon is not a problem here. It is expected.
When to Go
July and August: the Ohrid Summer Festival, concerts in a 2,000-year-old amphitheatre, and a beach shared with the entire Macedonian diaspora. Loud. Worth it.
Late September is the same lake with half the people. The water is still warm, the light is better, and you can actually hear yourself think. If you have flexibility, go then.
Going Back After Years Away
Something specific happens when you return to a place you only knew through stories or a single childhood trip. The lake is bigger than you expected. The town is smaller. The cousins have kids now. The kafana your tatko talked about is still there, same chairs.
Pack something you won't regret being seen in. The Tourist corduroy cap travels well and doesn't announce itself. You'll end up sitting by the water longer than planned. That is the correct outcome.
